Jet Set Gazette Ambassador:  Diego Bivero-Volpe

02/04/2013

Picture
Having originally worked in investment banking, Diego Bivero-Volpe experienced an epiphany which led him to begin working in events and eventually becoming a partner at The Brompton  and the highly popular Bodo's Schloss, both in Kensington. He has also featured in Made in Chelsea, after being in a relationship with Kimberley Garner. Diego's varied career is a testament to his willingness to engage in new and exciting opportunities, in true jet-setter fashion. Most excitingly, Diego has recently been confirmed as our new ambassador... so expect to hear more from this young entrepreneur!

What do you think a jet-setter is?
Someone that has a global view on their definition of home.

What is the most jet-set thing you've ever done?
When I was still working at an investment bank in the City, I flew to Ibiza for 7 hours one Thursday afternoon to go see David Guetta at Pacha, and flew back the next morning for an 8am meeting.

What is a typical day for you?
Breakfast, gym, and work till late followed by an event or some sort of social occasion, usually 3-4 times a week.

Where are you originally from?
I was born in Venezuela - of Italian heritage, raised in NYC / Tokyo and London. I am Italian though.

Where are your favourite places to travel to?
NYC, Tuscany and anywhere warm and interesting.

How did you get into what you are currently doing?

I completely fell into it, mainly as I was looking for a way out of what I considered a soulless job in investment banking.

Was it difficult leaving banking to enter your current profession?
It was the toughest and best decision of my life. Ultimately, in this economy, eventually everyone will have to have a more entrepreneurial approach to work. What were once considered stable industries (e.g. banking / law / corporate) are no longer. So - if you have a passion, don't be afraid to pursue it when you can still chose to (i.e. not when you're forced by redundancy / downsizing), you may be surprised by your own success"!

What are the perks of your job?
Being my own boss and setting my own challenges/

What's the worst part of your job?
Sometimes the lack of stability can be a bit daunting, but you carry on.

Why is London a special city?
It's the virtual centre of the world, close to everything - from India to NYC - thus it's a melting pot filled with all the wonders and wonderful people of the world.

Which area do you live in?
Most of my time has been spent living in Belgravia and Chelsea. Although I recently moved to Covent Garden. I love exploring new areas and Covent Garden is filled to the brim with amazing bars and restaurants! SoHo is great for the food and Mayfair for the grand architecture of a past era.

Where's your favourite place to shop in London?

Drakes is fantastic, but Marylebone has some hidden gems for menswear.

Which is your favourite London hotel?

I love Blakes in South Kensington, I stayed there for quite a few weeks and they looked after me very well!

Apart from Bodo's and The Brompton, where are your favourite places to go out in London?
I love 5 Hertford St and Annabel's for cocktails and a refined dinner and the Scotch of St James for a late-night.

What seperates your clubs from other clubs?
The Brompton is an Annabel's or Tramp made for and by our generation. Bodo's Schloss is designed to be a venue that allows you to escape your day to day routine and let your hair down. It was conceived as a place that produces consistent, unadulterated fun.

Do you have any hidden gems in London that you'd like to share?
If you love pulled pork - check out Pitt Cue off Carnaby St, and for a cool hidden bar and restaurant check out Spuntino, in Soho near The Box; amazing! Just keep exploring London; it's amazing how much there is to do and see in this city that we don't take advantage of!

What are your plans for the future?

Keep growing a successful business, travel the world and eventually settle down; but never settle for an average life.

Were you nervous about appearing on MIC?
It's always a bit daunting thinking that potentially millions of people are viewing and judging you. Overall, it was a great experience and a lot of fun. It was odd watching myself on TV. Most people will tell you they don't recognise themselves on TV, I'd say that is definitely true for me.

Do you still see fellow cast members? If so, who are you friendly with? Have you fallen out with anyone?
Of course! The ones still filming regularly tend to be quite wrapped up with that but I catch them out here and there and we'll have a drink to catch up. Not fallen out with anyone that I know of!

Celebrity Race Club's Ascot Event - 22/12/12

On a dark and rainy Saturday in December, the post-apocalyptic event of the year, Celebrity Race Club’s Ascot Event, took place. Whilst the weather conditions did not present the most persuasive case for travelling for more than an hour to attend the horse races, Warren Brown’s (Director of Celebrity Race Clubs) outstanding reputation for hosting equestrian-themed extravaganzas provided us with all the motivation needed to travel to Ascot.

Upon arriving at the small Berkshire town, approximately 25 miles outside London, we were greeted by the hosts of the event and ushered towards our VIP booth. We were welcomed into Suite 316-318, introduced to some key jet-setters and offered a glass of champagne. True to their name, the delightful bubbly, delicious canapés and luxurious booth meant that the only thing missing from the celebrity experience was a red carpet entrance.

Ascot Racecourse is steeped in history and has welcomed horse-racing fans for over 300 years; therefore, the modern, spacious and airy booths were an unexpected but welcomed feature. However, the newly-developed racing centre managed to retain its “totally British” vibe, to quote a guest of mine who had travelled from Minnesota.  Despite it being a sell-out event, the room seemed to be filled to an ideal capacity; there was enough room to feel comfortable, but it was full enough to create every event-planner’s dream ‘buzz’.

Before the first race began, the event hosts and Ed Chamberlin (Sky Sports presenter) made speeches, welcoming the guests to the event, suggesting horses to bet on and even giving the Jet Set Gazette a mention.  As soon as these finished, the betting booth in the corner of the room was swamped with seasoned gamblers, horse-racing aficionados and excitable newbies. Money was exchanging hands, receipts were being printed and the tension was so palpable that the atmosphere was probably more representative of a bustling Roman market than that of sleepy Berkshire town. The first race began, and the horses shot off around the picturesque racecourse. The crowds rushed to the balcony and cheered for their individual horses, racing newbies franticly flicked through their various receipts, shouting out various numbers and the thrill-seeking hedonists whispered, “If you win this one, you’re buying the Bollinger, okay?”

The following races continued in a similar manner. However, with the addition of red wine, the shouting gradually grew louder and more excitable, climaxing in the final moments of the fourth race, reaching a frequency that was barely audible to the human ears. I guess you could said that everybody shouted until their voices grew hoarse, if you pardon the pun.

Whilst racing was obviously a key part of the event, the day also presented an opportunity to socialize in luxurious and impressive surroundings. Amongst the attendees was Made in Chelsea’s Lucy Watson, the show’s protagonist. We caught up with Lucy and asked her about her day, however, we treaded carefully when talking to her, so as to not “get up in her grill”. The petite brunette told the Jet Set Gazette, “This is my first time racing, actually” and informed us that it was “all good fun”. Despite her fierce reputation, she kindly posed for photos with guests and was seen getting into the racing spirit.

Elsewhere at the Racecourse, Christmas festivities were taking place. In the centre of the complex, Christmas carollers were performing for the multitudes of race-goers, and costumed characters, reminiscent of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, were greeting the younger guests.

The day was truly a festive treat for all attending and successfully brought the racing year to an end.

Twitter's favourite satirical Sloane is our second member of the prestigious legit crowd. The highly controversial yet undoubtedly hilarious Twitter personality is famous for his offensive and outrageously funny comments on life, love and everything totes hilar.

*Please note: This is a spoof account and none of the responses are intended to offend.*

What do you think a jet-setter is?
A chap on a permanent gap yah.

Would you consider yourself a jet-setter?
Literally, I use planes like taxis.

What is the most jet-setter thing you’ve ever done?
Went to Jakarta, Indonesia for a night out. They have this club there called Stadium, it opens on Thursday and closes on Sunday. It was literally all kinds of fifty shades of cray.

What’s a typical day for Rupert?
My life is like one big Pimms tv advert. Lately, I don't even call it a hangover anymore. It’s just the morning.

What do you hope to do in the future?
Inherit Daddy’s hard work.

Where did you use to travel as a child?
I summered in the south of France. Mostly Bant-Tropez.

Where's your favourite place to travel to and why?

Daddy’s got a game reserve in South Africa. We holiday there every Christmas. It’s nice to get lashed on some fine local wines and reflect on the awesome power of nature.

Where's your favourite place to hang out in London?
The King’s Road, of course.

Where's your favourite place to go for drinks in London?
I’m a big fan of Rooftop bars, so I always enjoy Vista in Trafalgar Square.

Where would you take someone for a date in London?

Oskar’s Bar At Dabbous, Fitzrovia.

Which 3 essential items would you bring with you to a desert island?
My gilet, a bottle of Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 1986 and Daddy’s credit card.

Where would you still like to visit?
The moon. Apparently there is a company offering this service at $700,000 for two people. I’ll put it on Daddy’s credit card and sell it to him as a bonding exercise for us. That kind of emotional blackmail always works.

Why is London a special city?
Because I’m in it.

What has been your most embarrassing moment ever?
Taking a night bus home after a serious session.

Most banterful moment ever?
The other week I got thrown out of and banned from the W Hotel Barcelona, for swimming in foyer fountain.

I was so lashed and it seemed like a good idea at the time. The security staff were less than impressed and demanded I get out.  A couple of Spanish girls jumped in with me too and completely undermined their “authority”. It was literally bants.

Which do you prefer; a quiet night in, or a total chunderfest?
I’m here for a good time not a long time. Chunderfest.

If you were PM, what would be the first thing you change?
I would repeal the fox-hunting ban.

Have any tips on London that our readers might not be aware of?
I’m literally obsessed at the moment by London’s speakeasy scene. Speakeasies came into being in the 1920's Prohibition America and were haunts where citizens sneakily partook of the odd illegal tipple.

The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town is literally top bants. You have to ask the staff for an appointment with the “Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town”, upon which they take you through this giant Smeg Fridge and into a secret basement bar.

Do you like horse racing?
Absolutely. Betting on the horses is a great source of income when Daddy refuses to top up the bank account.

If you like horse-racing too, you should buy tickets ASAP to attend the 22/12/12 ASCOT EVENT.

Member of the legit crowd: Charlie Mills, Model

12/09/2012

Charlie Mills is a model, signed by Premier Models . Originally from the countryside, but now settled in London, he has had the best of both worlds growing up. He's certainly going to be living the #lifeofajetsetter when he moves to Tokyo for two months to model, in January.  Charlie is our first member of the prestigious, exclusive 'legit crowd'.

Are you a jet-setter?
In my opinion, the term jet-setter identifies an individual who does a lot of traveling either for business or for leisure. I don't know if I'm a jet-setter... I'll just say that I earn a lot of air miles! I'd say that the most jet-set thing that I do is that I never book anything in advance, I just decide on the day. So I just ring up with a few hours to spare and go!

What's a typical day in your life?
A typical day for me is such a hard thing to describe because I'm always doing something different. One day I might be nursing a hangover and then meeting mates for lunch. Whereas another day I might be working from 7 until 7. It's rather hard to describe as my life is terribly unpredictable!

What do you spend your money on?
My favourite clothing brand would be Hermes. It's one of my Mums favourites so I've grown to love it too. But I also shop in Ralph Lauren, Zili, Topman and Brooks Brothers. I love shopping on Bond Street mostly. All my favourite shops are there. However, you honestly cannot beat Harrods! There's everything you need in one store. One of my most embarrassing moments was when my card got declined there. So I rang up the card company and it turned out my Mum had put a limit on it... Luckily, I had my debit card so all was well.

Where is your favourite place to jet off to?

My favourite place abroad is anywhere with snow! I love to ski, and so does my family. My brother and I always hit the slopes before Christmas and after new year.  I would love to visit Africa. I've never been and I'd love to go on a safari or something like that.

Where would you take someone on a date?
On a date I'd go to Cecconi's in Burlington Gardens. It's great! Amazing food and their Grey Goose cocktails are incredible!

Where do you like to go on a night out?
My favourite place to eat in London is Home House. I also Love Nobu, they have great food and a wonderful view. After that, my favourite place to go out is Mahiki. The best nights I've had have always been at Mahiki! I also love Amika, the Rose Club, Maddox and Shoreditch House. But if I'm honest, I prefer a quiet night in to anything else! Just a few friends and a lot of booze is good enough for me.

What do you like about London?
London is such a special city! Not only thanks to its wealth of breathtaking architecture and amazing night life, but because there is always something happening and there is always somewhere to go, at any time of the day. I'm not from London, but I spent a lot of time here as a child. My family have a wonderful home in the countryside - it's a great place to go and relax if you're ever stressed! When I came with my family, we used to stay in the Ritz. I practically grew up in the Trafalgar Suite. Also... it's right by Mahiki! When I'm in London nowadays, I stay between Primrose Hill and Hadley Wood. I have friends who live in both areas so it's great to be close to them. Overall, I'd say my favourite place in London is Westminster. I love being near the water and just looking at the lights. It's a beautiful place.

What do you do when you're not working?
My hobbies are tennis, rowing and shooting. I also like a little fishing from time to time. I also like general pop music. Most stuff in the charts. Hip-hop and classical music too. A rather strange mix. A while back, I went to an Ed Sheeran gig. It was a small performance in London. He's an amazing artist.

What's next for Charlie Mills?
I'll probably carry on with my current job. But in the future I'd like to be working for one of my families companies.

To see what Charlie is up to now, you can follow him on twitter at @ItsCharlieMills.

Keep on jet-setting!
